As our summer brings itself to a blissful close and we approach the next period of, the ABP Surrey networking event, let’s cast our thoughts back to the humans and super humans of the Olympics and Paralympics who furnished us with accomplishments and exploits. While we sit and are amazed at their achievements, this alone does not get them over the finish line or solely impact on how they perform. How accurate were the ABP Psychologists and Consultants in predicting the Zircon Talent Management Results?

Dr Amanda Potter and Sarah Linton, presented the results of the Talent Management research at the 12th Annual ABP Conference last Friday.  It was a lively and interactive debate throughout with open challenge and discussion. At the beginning of the session, Amanda and Sarah asked the 55 delegates, who consisted of mainly Business Psychologists and HR Consultants, the following “What percentage of the 150 HR, Talent and Business Leaders who participated in the Zircon research said ‘yes’ to the following questions?”

  1. We have a Talent Management strategy
  2. We have a clear definition of Talent
  3. I understand our Talent Management strategy
  4. We openly communicate our Talent Management strategy
  5. We measure the ROI (return on investment) of our talent management practices.

Zircon are conducting a piece of Talent Management research, exploring the difference in perceptions of the definition, application and success of Talent Management between its Originators (HR and Talent Directors) and Implementers (Line Managers and Directors). The research explores the difference in definition, application and success of Talent Management Strategies within 85 Private, Public and Not for Profit Organisations. Should we strive for happiness within the workplace?

Should we strive to be happy at work or alternatively should we make do with what we have and find happiness in other areas of our life? When Sarah Linton was listening to Jessica Pryce-Jones from iOpener Ltd at the ABP Conference, she found that it was a compelling argument that we should have an eye on how “happy” individuals are at work in order to develop an effective workforce. Their research directly links self reported happiness with higher rates of attendance, time on task, feeling energised and productivity. And these statistics are seemingly significant, in some cases seeing a 100% improvement from those who are reporting feeling less happy. » Read more: Should we strive for happiness within the workplace?
