Latest News from Spinnaker, our Zircon Partner

January 5th, 2011 by Sarah Green Leave a reply »

With most of Spinnaker’s racing, cruising and chartering almost over for another year it seemed appropriate to take the opportunity to bring you up to date with their news and thank you for joining Zircon and Spinnaker in 2010.

Just when you think there is nowhere new to go on a Charter Sailing Day then along come new ideas! Gunwharf Quay proved very hospitable with a fine lunch in “The Ward Room” of “The Custom House”. Another excellent venue for lunch, after six Elan 410s had raced off Portsmouth Harbour Entrance, was at the Lightship in Haslar Marina before we dropped our charges (six Elan 410s for John Reddington) off at Gunwharf. Still at that end of the Solent, and in 35knots of wind, was a brilliant sail to Seaview (between Ryde and Bembridge), where RIBs took us ashore for a most enjoyable lunch at The Seaview Hotel with the Sailing Club giving us an option for another time.

The Jurassic Coast gave us our fill of usual delights with overnights in Weymouth followed by lunch on board in Lulworth Cove before having the sea breeze and tide whisk us home under spinnaker. We never tire of visiting Yarmouth although was tired after walking to Freshwater and back! Some great photos were taken by Hamo Thorneycroft on our “Albany Software” day en route to Beaulieu. We sailed well up river whilst having a pre lunch drink and then dropped alongside at Buckler’s Hard and had a very nice lunch prepared by Jez Barfoot, our in-house Chef fresh back from the quarter finals of BBC MasterChef.

Spinnaker Yacht’s Poole Days are as popular as ever with The Poole Hotel Du Vin giving an excellent additional dimension to our events. “Meet and Greet” over coffee and croissants in the Port Room returning for tea and cakes at the end of the day has proved very popular with clients and guests being able to avail themselves of the fine dining and high class overnight facilities The Poole advantage has been the immediate access to the Jurassic Coast and quiet Bays for taking lunch at anchor and again enjoying Jez’s fine food with a glass of wine. Even the odd inclement day has been fine with The Harbour and lee from the Dorset Cliffs giving ample shelter from the elements, believe it or not everyone loved it; no complaints! Our dual Poole/Solent service is working well with some great trips between the two making an event in itself which detail we will bring to you next year in case you have the time to join us for “the run” (or beat!).

Racing, both for our own enjoyment and that of our clients, has been superb this year, as indeed it is every year; we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t so.

This was Spinnaker Yachts 4th year showing off the GallifordTry red and grey logo on “Premier Flair” with a good showing at Cowes Week and Little Britain, where James Armitage helmed us to a fine win in the last race. It was Zircon’s 1st year at Cowes in 2010 and we look forward to joining Jim and colleagues at Cowes in 2011.

Albany Software supported Flair for the 2010 Commodore’s Cup campaign. Unfortunately Adrian Stafford-Jones’ back problems denied him direct involvement in the event after helping us gain the top qualifying spot for the English Team.

Two of Spinnaker Yachts Elan 410’s are planning to do the Fastnet Race in 2011, with all the practice and qualifying races, and there may be some opportunities for individuals to join the teams. Talk to Jim early if you would like to become involved in one of the most famous Ocean Races in the world.

The Yachts are currently being prepared for the 2011 season, so prepare yourselves for more sailing with us in 2011! It’s YOUR Sailing Day!
